Comparative Essays

When writing the Comparative Essay, Students must compare and contrast cultures in relations to different locations and different times. Students must organize their essays comparative theme or commonalities. Students should begin the Comparative Essay Writing Exam with a 5-minute brainstorming/organization period; students will have 40-minute writing period.

When writing, students must:

  • address both similarities and differences
  • construct a thesis that states the major similarity and/or difference
  • directly compare and contrast each culture in the body of the essay (multiple time
  • use supporting fact to support all comparisons and contrasts
  • use transitional word i.e. however, on the other hand, conversely ...

Thesis Format:
During [time period from prompt], region Culture A and Culture B responded to [world process] similarly in X, while there were differences in Y. [X and Y should be key concepts of themes]
